What Do Women Think About Bald or Balding Men?

It’s an interesting and important question—for men and women. It’s especially important for men who are dating or looking to start dating again after ending a relationship. Whereas science has researched everything from heart disease to the impact of testosterone on male health, there’s no scientific research detailing what women think about bald men.

However, there’s plenty of Internet chatter.

On a Yahoo forum, when asked what women think about balding men, the replies included:

“It is not usually a turn on…”

“Of course a lush mane is pleasant to look at…”

“For me, it's better for a guy who’s losing his hair to shave it all if he doesn't have any other options.”

There isn’t a consensus. Some women clearly want their man to have a full head of hair. Some can go either way. Others, interestingly, prefer totally bald and shaved to thinning or balding.

From another Internet forum:

“Every girl I know makes fun of bald men under the age of 40.”

“The majority of younger women/girls, especially the more attractive ones, prefer their guy with a full head of hair.”

While some men discover that losing their hair attracts women, most men discover the exact opposite. Yes—some celebrity bald men, like Michael Jordan and Patrick Stewart, are attractive to women; these are men who have always decided to be totally bald with the help of regular shaving.

Women are clearly less attracted to men who are going through the process of losing their hair. Overall, most women would prefer a thick head of real hair—the sort of result a man can achieve with modern hair replacement surgery.

However, several male celebrities, including Elton John, Mel Gibson, and Wayne Rooney, decided that being bald was not for them. They invested in hair transplants.

There’s no scientific answer when it comes to whether or not women like bald men, thinning men, or men with a thick head of hair. Perhaps a columnist from a British newspaper puts it best:

“Giving myself a Dr. Evil was the only dignified option. I soon got used to having stubble instead of anything that warranted shampooing, and now I've turned 40, many of my friends have joined me…As for women, the situation is the same as when I owned a comb; some like me, some don't. I’d still rather have hair….”
