Vinegar to Prevent Hair Loss

Hair loss, defined as the loss of more than 100 hairs per day, affects millions of men and women in the United States and around the world. Approximately 40% of men, for example, experience some degree of noticeable hair loss by the age of 35.

That number increases to 65% by age 60 and 80% by age 80. Although hair loss is more common in men, about half of all women experience hair loss at some point in their lives.

When It Comes to Hair Loss, Myths Abound

The devastation of hair loss sends many who experience it on a desperate search to find a solution. These include everything from the notion that pulling out a grey hair will cause 3 new ones to grow in its place, to the contention that baldness comes from your mother's side of the family (which has not been proven).

Apple Cider Vinegar for Hair Growth: Fact or Fiction?

Then, there's the idea that applying apple cider vinegar (ACV) to your hair promotes new hair growth. Although the origins of this notion aren't clear, it likely derives from the popularity of ACV's supposed health benefits in other areas, like aiding in weight loss and stabilizing blood sugar levels. In addition, some studies indicate that ACV might have a positive effect on other aspects of hair health, like balancing hair and scalp pH levels and smoothing hair cuticles.

Whether ACV can give you a healthier head of hair is the subject of some debate, but beyond some questionable anecdotal evidence, there appear to be no recognized studies which demonstrate that ACV can either prevent hair loss or promote hair growth.

What ACV will do for you hair (because of its alkalinity) is remove traces of haircare products (like shampoos and styling products) on your scalp. The buildup of residues from such products can clog hair follicles, which in turn can lead to conditions like dandruff—but that doesn't mean that ACV will stop hair loss. Said differently, the notion that ACV can reverse hair loss or cause new hair to grow is a myth.

When It Comes to Treating Hair Loss, There's No Substitute for Expertise

It's understandable that men and women who are experiencing hair loss will "try anything" to reverse the process—but turning to home remedies and blindly accepting the many myths which abound (and believing the questionable claims of businesses which exploit those false notions and the people who believe them) won't solve the problem. In fact, doing so can be a costly mistake; it can even be dangerous.
