Hanover Park Woman Gets New Hair Using 3-D Technology

HANOVER PARK – Rebecca Fiske of Hanover Park recently received a new Italian prosthetic hair-loss system by CRLAB, which uses 3-D printing technology.

The 42-year-old single mom has been dealing with stressful hair loss for years, stated the news release about the CNC system, the company’s trademarked Italian acronym for natural hair.

“I selected the CNC for a few different reasons,” Fiske said in the release. “I was having issues with my old system sliding back on my head, making the front lift up, and it was very noticeable. Also, other hair systems were so processed they would tangle very easily – sometimes taking 45 minutes to comb out after washing it.”

Fiske’s CNC system came from Mane Image Hair Restoration Center in Merrillville, Ind. It is owned by Leslie Robinson, described as the only hair-loss expert in Illinois and Indiana using the CRLAB CNC system.

“It felt great to finally get my CNC,” Fiske said. “I can’t even feel it on my head. It’s so light. It has an actual part. I’m looking forward to washing it and styling it on my own. The length is just gorgeous.”

Robinson said the system Fiske is wearing is a custom prosthetic.

“A custom prosthetic CNC is actually a thin skin material that hair is injected into,” she said in the release, noting it requires a three-month, multi-step process.

“What we do is we design the CNC to fit into the thin area, which is usually on the top of the head,” she said.

First she designs a cast for dimensions and shape, then makes a mold of a client’s head. The pieces are then shipped to Europe.

“These two go to Bologna, Italy, where a 3-D imaging machine makes a custom CNC prosthetic,” Robinson said. “When the CNC comes back to Mane Image, we custom style it to ... a client’s specifications.”

Fiske said several things set it apart from other hair systems she’s used, citing, “the exact fit to your own head ... the flow and texture of the hair; the adhesive doesn’t leak out.”

Robinson said the only maintenance, other than what Fiske would do with her normal hair, is one visit a month to Mane Image.

“She can wash her hair every day,” Robinson said. “She can swim. She can do everything she would like to do.”

Robinson said helping people with hair loss has a deeply personal meaning for her.

“When I was little ... I had an anxiety disorder,” she said. “Feeling different from other people is extremely painful. When I see someone come in with hair loss, I can see that pain that they’re in. It’s such a joy to give them their hair back and see that pain just dissipate.”
