Understanding the Phases of the Hair Growth Cycle

From the second a strand of hair begins growing, it will enter several stages. Many people may not realize this, or even know what the stages are. Different hairs may be at different stages of growth at any given time. For those who may wonder why it is important to understand each phase of the hair growth process, it is so that each person can know about or possibly prevent any issues with their hair. Knowing what to expect is the first step to a healthy head of hair, so let's discuss each phase in its entirety.

The Anagen Phase

Also known as the growth phase, this is the first phase that the hair enters. This is the phase when many people who are trying to achieve certain lengths keep an eye on their hair as it grows approximately a half inch per month. The length of the anagen phase can vary from person to person, approximately two to five years. During this time, the cells in the root divide time and again, causing the strand of hair to grow. Those who have hair that stays in this phase for an extended period of time may be able to see their hair grow extremely long, while individuals with shorter anagen phases have trouble getting their hair past a certain length.

The Catagen Phase

The second phase of the growth cycle is called the catagen phase, or transition phase, and it is the time in which structural changes take place in each strand of hair. At this time, the hair stops growing. As the hair follicle decreases in size, the bulb is detached from the blood supply and the follicle becomes very loose in the hair shaft. As a result, the hair is easily, and possibly quickly, shed. Lasting for approximately two to three weeks, it is during this phase that the hair is formed into a club hair. A club hair is a strand of hair that is ready to be shed. The bulb of the hair converts to keratin, taking on a club-like shape.

The Telogen Phase

This is the final phase of the hair growth cycle. Lasting for about three to six months, it is the second shortest phase that the hair goes through in its lifetime. At this point, the hair has reached the longest length possible and is no longer receiving nutrition from the blood supply. At any given time, approximately 15% of the hair on every person's head is in this phase, known as the resting phase. These hairs may be referred to as older hairs on the head, and it is during this time that newer hairs begin to grow.

As can be seen, all of the hairs on the head are in a certain stage of the growth cycle.
