Women's Hair Loss: Celebrity Stories

Though hair loss is a common condition among both men and women, there is a bit of a social stigma surrounding women's hair loss. Likely, this is a result of the prominence of male hair loss stories in media and advertising.

If you are a woman experiencing hair loss, rest assured, you are not alone. It is estimated that over 30 million women in the United States are experiencing hair loss, but, sadly, this widespread experience is rarely discussed. Here at Mane Image, we want to open the conversation and assure you, our clients, that women's hair loss is common, and many women have overcome hair thinning.

To demonstrate, we've compiled a list of some big-name celebrities and beauty queens who have experienced hair loss.

Darling Divas

Some of our favorite singers have experienced hair loss as a result of over-processing, over-use of extensions, and teasing. Both Dolly Parton and Lady Gaga wear wigs to disguise hair loss caused by excessive dyeing. Christina Aguilera experienced a bout of alopecia in 2003 as a result of peroxide and hair extensions, and Britney Spears' hairline has receded noticeably (likely as a result of hair extensions). The late, great Amy Winehouse used her signature beehive to cover the areas of her hair that were becoming patchy. Tina Turner began wearing wigs as a result of hair loss from over-bleaching, though her decision to keep wearing them is not related to disguising hair loss.

As you can imagine, these pop stars and beltresses put their hair through hell to achieve the perfect look. Of course, all that styling, dyeing, and processing can lead to breakage and bald spots, so it's not surprising that these women are seeing changes in their hair. If you are experiencing thinning or breakage, consider changing your hair routine. Give your hair a break from excessive styling and watch it thrive.

Famous Faces

These actresses tresses have seen better days... Helena Bonham Carter, Tyra Banks, Viola Davis, and Megan Fox have all experienced hair loss. Some of these women experienced hair loss as a result of outside stressors. Tyra Banks, for example, experienced alopecia when she was balancing her business commitments with writing her book. Megan Fox explained that due to weight loss and yo-yo dieting her health deteriorated and her hair began to fall out. Viola Davis has patchy hair due to alopecia areata, and Helena Bonham Carter's thinning hair may be a result of over-styling.

The causes of hair loss are numerous, and affect even the rich and famous. No two cases of hair loss are alike, but knowing some of the common causes is extremely helpful in understanding your options and fighting back. Yes, women also experience hair loss, and some of Hollywood's idols are here to attest to that fact.

Beauty Queens

Wouldn't you know it, even beauty queens experience hair loss! Again, over-styling over the course of pageants may be the main culprit, but other stressors such as dieting, poor nutrition, and lack of sleep are also at work in the case of these beauties. In 2010, Kayla Martell (Miss Delaware 2010) was named the National Liaison of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Martell experienced unexplained alopecia at a young age and wears wigs to cover her baldness. Of course, hair loss did not stop her from becoming a Miss America finalist in 2011!

Bree Morse (Miss California 2016) was also diagnosed with alopecia areata. In 2011 Mrs. Black North Carolina crowned its first bald beauty queen, motivational speaker Sandra Dubose-Gibson. Dubose-Gibson lost all her hair to alopecia, but decided that her hair didn't define her beauty.
