How to Care for Your Scalp

Clients come to Mane Image because they think they have problems with their hair—but often, that’s just part of the story. What seems like a hair issue is often a scalp issue, more fundamentally. To grow thick and lustrous hair, it’s vital to have a clean scalp and healthy follicles, yet that’s something that’s easy to neglect. In this post, we’ll look at some ways to care for your scalp—and ultimately to create a fertile place for hair to grow.

Brush Your Hair Daily—Especially Before Showering

Brushing your hair is actually more for your scalp than anything else; when you give your hair a good, gentle brushing, you brush away most of the dandruff and dead skin cells that have accumulated.

This is an especially prudent thing to do before you jump into the shower. With a clean and clear scalp, you’ll better be able to massage and cleanse your pores and your follicles. Make sure you don’t get too rough, though, and also make an effort to invest in a good, natural-bristle brush. Replace the brush whenever the bristles start to get dingy or frayed.

Shampoo Regularly—and Gently

Generally speaking, we’d recommend shampooing every two or three days—as opposed to shampooing daily. The reasons for this are many; for one thing, daily shampooing can strip your hair of its protective coating, leaving it dried out and damaged. More relevant to today’s topic, though, is the fact that daily shampooing removes the scalp’s natural oils, which are important for keeping your scalp conditioned.

Also invest in a gentle, natural shampoo—especially if you tend to get sweaty and feel like you need to shampoo more often. We’re happy to help you discover the best shampoo for your scalp here at Mane Image.

Use Conditioner after Shampooing

On the days that you do shampoo, make sure you use conditioner afterward. The reason for this is simple: Conditioner helps replenish the moisture that you lose during the shampooing process. This is vital for keeping your scalp healthy.

Make sure you look for a conditioner that’s made with natural moisturizers, such as plant oils. Again, the Mane Image team can direct you to some good, helpful products.

Protect Your Scalp from the Elements

This is more of a seasonal tip, but definitely an important one: When you expose your scalp to excessive sunlight, it can have a damaging effect. It can dry out your skin, and even lead to sunburn.

If you’re going to be outside in the sun for any period of time, make sure you cover your hair with a scarf. Alternatively, invest in a good SPF sunscreen that’s made especially for your hair and scalp. You can find some quality conditioners that come with sunscreen built in, which can be a convenient option.

Don’t Dismiss Scalp Problems

Something else to note: If you ever do notice serious problems with your scalp, don’t ignore them, and don’t assume they’ll get better on their own. This is especially true of dandruff. If you notice dandruff, get a good anti-dandruff shampoo and start using it as directed. If the problem persists, come see one of our stylists at Mane Image.

Something like dandruff, when left untreated, can seriously compromise the health of your scalp—and thus, the health of your hair. It’s not an exaggeration to say that, by leaving scalp issues untreated, you could seriously threaten the fullness and luster of your hair.
